Wiselife project: transnational meeting in Athens

On 4 and 5 November 2021, the second transnational project meeting was held in Athens, where the participating organisations met in person for the first time almost a year after the official start of the collaboration.

Hosted by the University of the Aegean, the meeting aimed at taking stock of the work, first of all with regard to the forthcoming publication of the volume that will contain the analyses on the state of ageism in the national contexts of the project partners. In this regard, the researchers from the University of Economics of Izmir, responsible for this intellectual output and leader of the consortium, outlined an interesting overview based on the elaboration of data extrapolated from the answers to the questionnaires that had been circulated between April and June in the different countries. It became clear that, despite some basic similarities, in each country the phenomenon takes on different characteristics and that different variables affect the population's inclination towards ageism. In Poland, for example, it is older women who are more exposed to discrimination and prejudice, especially in the area of health. In Turkey, those on lower incomes seem more prone to ageism than those on higher monthly salaries, regardless of their level of education. In Italy, on the other hand, it is a higher level of schooling that determines a lower propensity to stereotypes, prejudices and negative tendencies towards citizens over 65.

The specific topics and the structure of the training cycle planned for May 2022 were also discussed and shared. This training is one of the tools that will make up the future toolkit for the education of older people, another project output that will take shape in the course of next year and then be made available free of charge to universities, training centres and organisations active in the field of adult education.

Finally, the partners received detailed technical instructions on how to make the videos that will be used to structure the documentary, which will be edited by Bilge Egemen, a Turkish journalist and documentary filmmaker of Palestinian origin.

The next transnational meeting, scheduled for April 2022, will be held in Poland at the University of Lodz.
